Hip Hop Album Sales: Lil Wayne’s “Tha Carter V” Crowned — Yep! — No. 1 On Billboard 200

Lil Wayne’s Tha Carter V has (unsurprisingly) debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart for the week ending October 4. It marks Weezy’s fourth project to nab the crown and also the second-largest streaming week for an album ever.

Trailing behind is Logic’s Young Sinatra IV project, which lands at No. 2, while Kevin Gates’ Luca Brasi 3 hits the chart running at No. 4.

Elsewhere, Drake’s Scorpion moves from No. 4 to No. 5 and Eminem’s surprise album Kamikaze falls from No. 3 to No. 6.
Weezy, Baby!

Just like Kanye West predicted, Lil Wayne’s long-awaited CV made its grand entrance at the top of the chart. With 480,126 total album equivalent units, 140,879 pure album sales and a streaming count of 433,018,729, the 23-track project not only marks the third biggest sales week for the year but also the second-largest streaming week ever for any album.

By comparison, Weezy’s last Carter album, 2011’s Tha Carter IV, sold roughly 964,000 copies in its first week, earning the highest first-week album sales since Lady Gaga’s Born This Way. It also debuted at No. 1 and was certified double-platinum by the RIAA nearly three months after its release.

Logic’s self-proclaimed “Sinatra Season” has arrived and finds his new album — Young Sinatra IV — sliding in at No. 2. Boasting 166,550 total album equivalent units, 121,633 pure album sales and a streaming count of 57,917,180, YSIV couldn’t outsell Wayne but it serves as the Maryland-bred rapper’s fifth Top 10 and second this year.

Everybody, which he released in May 2017, debuted at No. 1 with around 247,000 total album equivalent units sold in its first week. It was Logic’s first No. 1 album.

After finally being release from prison, Kevin Gates is back to work. His latest project, the Luca Brasi 3 mixtape, hits the chart at No. 4 with 78,195 total album equivalent units, 17,871 pure album sales and a streaming count of 76,128,491.

LB3 is Gates’ eighth mixtape and third in the series. The last installment, the appropriately titled Luca Brasi 2, was released in 2014 and debuted at No. 38 with 26,224 units sold in its first week.
